Insulation

Published on 9th August, 2010

It’s all very well to have the latest in heating technology, whether it’s a ground/air source heat pump, or solar panels, or underfloor pipes, but all this effort will go to waste if the saved energy is lost again through the walls or roof. Good insulation is the key to making your house greener, and it’s surprisingly cheap. In the Lake District, Eden District Council has even gone so far as to offer free loft and cavity wall insulation to homeowners and private tenants if they apply before mid-August. Two hundred householders have reportedly taken up the deal, with the same number again being urged to consider it.

For those who don’t know much about loft and cavity insulation, there are some good articles here and here. Of particular interest is the part where a £600 yearly bill on an un-insulated home could be halved once you finish your installation. For those of you who are thinking ‘Why are we just getting around to this? Surely we could have done something about insulation ages ago?’ you might be surprised to know that insulation has been going on for thousands of years, starting with wattle and daub being used on walls to stop the wind. The idea hasn’t changed much, but the materials have certainly improved over the years!

Additionally, you may remember that EcoLogicLiving was on CountryFile recently, so if you missed it, watch it again here.
